Brisbane Markets® Produce Report
As we reach the middle of the spring season, we can look forward to the arrival of some early summer fruits in the coming weeks. While growing regions may shift for certain lines, one thing remains unchanged: your local independent fruit and vegetable store displaying the A better choice! logo has an extensive range of quality fresh, seasonal produce sourced through the Brisbane Markets.
This week, our pick of the week is Rockmelon from Bundaberg and Central Queensland. Known for their sweet, floral, and distinctly musky taste profile, Rockmelons are in excellent supply right now, and the quality is superb. Juicy, soft, and nearly buttery when fully ripe, look for a beige, sandy-gold, or creamy-yellow rind with no green undertones and a melon that feels surprisingly heavy for its size. Store whole, unripe Rockmelon on the counter at room temperature out of direct sunlight for one to two days until it ripens, then move it to the fridge.
Blueberries from Caboolture and New South Wales are in abundance, making them a great value choice. Blueberries are a nutritious addition to lunchboxes, breakfast bowls, smoothies or enjoyed as a healthy snack straight from the punnet. For a fun twist on a breakfast classic that the whole family will enjoy, why not try French Toast Ravioli.
Coming in from North Queensland, Watermelon is great eating right now. Keep cool on a hot day with a delicious piece of chilled Watermelon straight from the fridge or freezer, or if you want something a little different, try this budget-friendly Watermelon, Cucumber and Feta Salad.
The king of taste, Garlic, will give any dish the extra flavour it is looking for.Grown in Lowood and New South Wales, Garlic never fails to make your dish unforgettable. Available all year round, Garlic provides you with the opportunity to create flavoursome dishes, every day.
Grown in New South Wales, Artichoke stocks are high this week and are a great vegetable choice if you are wanting something a little different. A great source of vitamin C and dietary fibre, Artichoke is well worth the effort to prepare! To find out, enjoy our Mediterranean Roasted Artichoke recipe.
Speaking of something different, Taro from the Sunshine Coast is the root vegetable you did not know you needed. With a texture similar to Potato, and a flavour often compared to Sweet Potato or chestnut, Taro is generally considered healthier than a standard white potato because it contains more than twice the dietary fibre and is low GI. When selecting Taro, choose bulbs that feel heavy for their size and are free from bruising. Store Taro in a cool, dark place, such as the pantry, where it will keep for three to seven days.
Visit your local independent fruit and vegetable store displaying the A better choice! logo and enjoy a variety of quality, fresh produce grown on Australian farms and sourced through the Brisbane Markets, Queensland’s Heart of Fresh Produce.
