Brisbane Markets® Produce Report

With the final school term of 2026 officially away, it is time to get back into the regular school routine. Whether you are packing lunchboxes, planning quick family dinners or looking for easy breakfast ideas, your local independent fruit and vegetable store displaying the A better choice! logo has a winning line-up of fresh, seasonal produce sourced through the Brisbane Markets.

This week, our pick of the week is Red Capsicum from Bundaberg and Bowen. With a plethora of quality, Red Capsicums available, there should be some great value around this week, making it a great addition to the weekly shop. Sweet, crisp and packed with vitamin C, it is perfect for school lunches, salads, stir-fries, roasting or adding colour to family meals. Look for Capsicums that are firm and heavy for their size, shiny, and bright red with an intact, vibrant green stem. Keep unwashed Capsicums in a plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper drawer where they will stay fresh and crisp for about four to five days. Once cut, place them in an airtight container or a glass jar lined with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture and keep them in the refrigerator, where they should last for another three to seven days. For an easy, entertaining option, try Roasted Capsicum Bruschetta with Halloumi.

Celery from the Scenic Rim is also looking fresh and crisp right now, with an abundant supply this week. Low in calories and naturally high in water, Celery is a refreshing addition to salads, soups, stir-fries and lunchboxes. Choose bunches with firm, crisp stalks and bright green leaves. For a fresh side dish, try this Thai Celery Salad.

Lebanese Cucumbers from Coffs Harbour and Bundaberg are a great-value choice this week. Crisp, refreshing and easy to eat, Cucumbers are best stored in the refrigerator, and enjoy them within a few days for the best crunch. For a quick family meal, try this Soba Noodle Salad.

R2E2 Mangoes from Bowen are bringing a taste of Queensland summer to the fruit bowl, with seasonal availability kicking into gear. Known for their large size, juicy flesh and sweet flavour, choose Mangoes that are firm but give slightly when gently squeezed, with a sweet aroma around the stem. If they need more time to ripen, leave them at room temperature for a few days, or place them in a paper bag with a ripe banana or apple. For a simple dessert the whole family will love, try this Mango Mousse.

For something a little more exotic, look out for Star Apples from Far North Queensland. This unusual tropical fruit has sweet, soft and juicy flesh, with its distinctive star-shaped pattern revealed when cut across the middle. Choose firm, smooth fruit and allow it to ripen at room temperature before refrigerating. Star Apple is a good source of vitamin C and dietary fibre and is delicious chilled and scooped straight from the skin.
