Brisbane Produce Report – 8 March 2024

The cooler weather is finally coming, and we’re noticing changes in the variety of produce arriving at the Brisbane Markets and appearing on the shelves of your local fruit and veg shop! Discover what’s in season, what’s delicious, and what offers good value for your shopping this week.

Zucchini is pick of the week, with plenty of this delicious veggie coming in from growers across South east Queensland, Bundaberg and Victoria. With dark green skin and pale flesh, this herbaceous squash can be enjoyed roasted, steamed or grilled.

For a budget friendly addition to your salads, you can’t go past Lebanese Cucumbers this week. Coming from Local Growers, Bundaberg and Victoria, Cucumbers are perfect for salads, sandwiches and pickling.

Also from Bundaberg, Gold Sweet Potatoes are great value, rich in flavour and packed with nutrients. They can be incredibly versatile in the kitchen, used as a vegetable side or even as an ingredient in recipes like these Sweet Potato, Spring Onion and Feta Salad.

There are plenty of Butternut Pumpkin and Kent Pumpkin available. These affordable gourds go naturally with roasts, but if you have fussy eating kids, even they will love this creamy yet healthy Pumpkin Mac and Cheese.

Start a fiesta this weekend with Tomatillos from Victoria! This husk tomato is a small, green fruit originating from Mexico. Get some corn chips, Jalapenos and some Queensland grown Limes and make a tangy, spicy Salsa Verde.

Sticking in the citrus family, Lemons are coming in from North Queensland, and are in great supply and well-priced. Lemons make a great addition to tea, added to salad dressing, or used to top your morning Avocado on toast! This Lemon Pepper Fish with Greens and Salsa is a healthy option for you and the family.

A summer favourite, Watermelon from New South Wales is still cheaply priced and the go-to hydrating snack. Stay refreshed with this Cucumber, Watermelon and Basil Cooler.

Dragon Fruit is in season now, and plenty of this exotic fruit is coming in from growers in North Queensland, Bundaberg, and Byron Bay. With vibrant, pink skin and white or red flesh speckled with black seeds, this visually stunning fruit has a sweet flavour that can be enjoyed as is, in smoothies, salads or desserts.

Red Papaya from North Queensland is exceptional eating quality and great value this week. A red, football shaped fruit, Papaya is full of antioxidants to boost the health of your skin and immune system. Why not make these Breakfast Crepes with Papaya and Passionfruit Glaze for a delicious condiment that complements any dish.
