Brisbane Produce Report – 15 December 2023
It’s the most wonderful time of the year; long, warm days and festive feasting is just around the corner! Get inspired by the wonderful produce, sourced from the Brisbane Markets, on the shelf at your local fruit and veg shop and enjoy the flavours of the season this summer!
Our pick of the week is the Lychee. A sweet yet tangy, fragrant fruit, Lychees are in good supply from Mareeba. Lychees are a great source of vitamin C and dietary fibre. Peel some for a quick snack, add to a fruit salad or desert for a tasty twist, or celebrate the holidays with a Cucumber and Lychee Sour.
Figs are in season from the Lockyer Valley, Glasshouse Mountains, Stanthorpe and Victoria. These sweet, colourful fruit are delicious to eat skin and all, but they also go wonderfully in salads to add extra flavour, and can even be made into a tasty Fig Jam.
We are still in the middle of stone fruit season, with juicy Nectarines, Peaches, Plums and Apricots making their way into the Brisbane Markets from Stanthorpe and Victoria. For a summer, festive treat, this Stone Fruit Salad uses Nectarines, but you could easily swap them out for any other in-season stone fruit or even a combination of a few.
While the Cherry season started early this year and some Cherry growing regions were affected by heavy rains , because the Brisbane Markets source produce from growers all over Australia, there are still sweet, plump Cherries available at your local fruit and veg shop. Pick up a bunch as a tasty snack, or cool off on a hot day with this Cherry Sangria.
Pineapples are a tropical fruit that just feel like summer, and they’re good value and in good supply from Mareeba this week. For a delicious, caramelised desert, try this Pan Fried Pineapple recipe.
We’re seeing Cherry Tomatoes, Truss and Gourmet Tomatoes coming though the Brisbane Markets from Bundaberg, Gatton, Stanthorpe and South Australia, well-priced for the holidays. This Roasted Cherry Tomato Salad is a simple yet satisfying summer side dish you can add to the table.
You’ll find well priced Eggplant from South Australia in your local fruit and veg shop this week. Also known as an Aubergine, Eggplant is good for your bones, helps to improve memory, lower blood pressure and aid in digestion. It’s also a versatile fruit, not a vegetable as some may think, able to be used in a lot of different ways depending on how you prepare it. Just look at this Eggplant Lasagna that uses Eggplant instead of pasta.
There’s still great supply of Sweet Potato from Bundaberg and Central Queensland, which is perfect for Christmas dinners. Some like debate which is healthier between Sweet Potatoes and White Potatoes, but in reality, both have their nutritional advantages, though Sweet Potato is higher in vitamin A.
Add something a little different to your shop this week with Okra, an edible green seed pod that’s coming in from Gatton. Also known as “Lady Fingers”, Okra is high in vitamin C, A and B6, and has a mild, almost grassy flavour sometimes compared to that of an Eggplant or Green Beans.
