Brisbane Produce Report – 22 September 2023

Spring is well and truly here, and with some great weather being experienced across many growing regions, there’s a broad range of incredible produce coming into the Brisbane Markets and making its way to your local fruit and veg shop. With the school holidays in full swing, pick up your favourites to make some delicious meals and snacks that the whole family will love!

Our pick of the week is Asparagus from Victoria.Asparagus is a great option to add to breakfast or dinner, simply grill the tender spears with a touch of olive oil and sea salt, add them to pasta dishes, or create a vibrant Asparagus salad with lemon vinaigrette! Try our Spaghetti al Limone with Asparagus for a refreshing spring delight!

Capsicum from Bowen and Bundaberg is still in great supply this week. Packed full of beta-carotene, magnesium, and vitamins C, B6 and K, Capsicum helps keep your eyes healthy, boosts immunity, reduces anxiety and helps protect you from chronic disease. Why not try this Roasted Capsicum Bruschetta with Halloumi for a tasty breakfast or lunch?

Also, from Bowen and Bundaberg, Chillies are plentiful this week. Scoville Heat Units (SHU) is the range to look at if you’re wondering how spicy of a Chilli you can handle. A Jalapeno has an SHU range of 2500 to 8000 SHU while a Carolina Reaper (the world’s hottest Chilli) can max out at a whopping 2.2 million SHU! Ease yourself into the fire with this delicious Jalapeno Ranch Dressing.

Pick up some Lebanese Cucumbers from Coffs Harbour and Brisbane Valley this week for a snack that delivers on crunch and flavour! Add Cucumber to your salads and sandwiches, or enjoy alone with your favourite dip! Why not make your very own Tzatziki and enjoy this simple homemade dip with your lunch this week.

Hass Avocados from Blackbutt, Northern Rivers, South Australia and Western Australia are in abundance right now. Avocados can be enjoyed with any meal of the day, and are a great source of your daily vitamins including magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin K. The last of the cooler months has seen plenty of amazing quality Limes in the Market. Limes can add a delicious burst of flavour to drinks, sweets, and salad dressings. Take advantage of the warmer days by sitting in the sun with a delicious Dark and Stormy.

Another North Queensland staple is Lady Finger Bananas. With supply improving, and great eating right now, Bananas are a delicious snack that can really add so much flavour – from smoothies to curries, Bananas are a great option. Fresh Pineapple is an absolute joy to experience, and they are great eating right now from Yeppoon and Bundaberg. They are coming back from the glut of small Pineapples experienced earlier in the year as a result of last year’s unseasonal winter rain and early crop flowering. So pick some up this week and experience a mix of salty and sweet with these Pork Ribs with Pineapple Salsa.
