Brisbane Produce Report – 15 September 2023

With an abundance of delicious seasonal fruits and vegetables making their way through the Brisbane Markets, now’s a great time to head into your local fruit and veg shop and reap the rewards of seasonal produce! It’s a busy time for Bundaberg, one of Queensland’s largest fresh produce growing regions. The rich red volcanic soil, and high average rainfall makes this region incredible for growing the delicious fruit and veg we love all year round!

Our pick of the week is Ginger coming infrom Bundaberg, Sunshine Coast and Northern New South Wales. Ginger offers a multitude of benefits, including aiding digestion, reducing nausea, boosting immunity, and promoting overall well-being with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Pick up some Ginger from your local fruit and veg shop this week and enjoy the benefits of this powerful food. You can even add it to your morning Zesty Ginger Juice!

Another Bundaberg staple in great supply this week is Capsicum. Also available from Noth Queensland,Capsicum has awonderfully peppery flavour, is great to add to pasta sauces, stuff with delicious filling or slice them into salad. These Egg Muffins with Bacon and Capsicum are an easy breakfast to put together or make them to pack in the kids’ lunchbox.

The nutty and creamy flavours of Bundaberg-grown Butternut Pumpkin make a delicious addition to most meals including roasts, curries, soups, baked dishes and even sweets! One of our favourite ways to enjoy Pumpkin is a simple Pumpkin Frittata.

Gympie Brussels Sprouts are skin-loving superfoods with a host of nutrients including vitamin K, vitamin A, and iron to promote collagen in your skin, and help to hydrate your skin to reduce dullness! Add your favourite greens to a soup or salad, like our Pear and Brussel Sprout Slaw.

Lebanese Cucumbers from North Queensland and Northern New South Wales are in excellent supply and quality. This vegetable is a refreshing addition to simple salads such as a crunchy Greek Salad or Middle-Eastern Fattoush. If you are looking for a great side dish, you can’t go past fresh home-made Sweet and Sour Pickled Cucumbers!

With a plentiful supply coming from Bowen, Tomatoes are bursting with flavour and their unique texture makes them ideal for everything from salads and sandwiches to sauces and roasts. What better way to enjoy Tomatoes than with a Tomato, Basil and Olive Pasta!

North Queensland Cavendish Bananas are in a healthy supply. This variety of Bananas is a delicious, sweet snack and great to have on the go. If you have a bit of extra time in the morning, give these Pan-fried Bananas with Coconut Yogurt a try.

Passionfruit from North and West Queensland is a delicious fruit, perfect for adding to drinks, sweets or salads. Make a Raspberry and Passionfruit Spritz to close out your week!

Plenty of citrus is still available and in great supply, including Limes from North Queensland and Navel Oranges from New South Wales. Their tangy zing adds a burst of sunshine to every dish.
