Brisbane Produce Report – 1 September 2023

Spring is finally here and it’s a better time than ever to visit your local fruit and veg shop! Eating seasonally is not only better for your wallet and the environment, but it’s a great way to change up your weekly meals and give you more inspiration for your days. As the seasons change, we are seeing winter varieties drop off and the start of some amazing summer fruit and vegetable varieties coming into your local fruit and veg shop sourced from the Brisbane Markets.

Our pick of the week is Blood Oranges, which have a deep, blood red colour to the flesh, are less acidic and slightly sweeter than more common varieties. The flavour is also more floral with hints of Raspberry and Strawberry. This unique citrus fruit is coming in from New South Wales and South Australia and has a very short season, so now is the time to try this delicious treat!

Sunshine Coast Strawberries continue to delight us, with delicious, sweet, great-quality berries in-store at your local fruit and veg shop. Make the most of the seasonal fruits with this delicious Blood Orange and Strawberry Galette.

It’s the week of citrus with Lemons and Limes from Bundaberg and North Queensland, and Mandarins from Gayndah, Victoria and South Australia all readily available! Why not try these Mandarin Meringue Pie Jars for a sweet treat?

Blueberries are in great supply from New South Wales this week and are the perfect way to celebrate the change in season. Blueberries are a good source of manganese, vitamin C, vitamin K1, are full of antioxidants and have a delightfully sweet flavour. Great to put on your morning yogurt or in a Blueberry and Banana Smoothie.

A staple in most houses, Tomato prices are down this week so it’s a great time to stock up! Tomatoes from sunny North Queensland are bursting with flavour and their unique texture makes them ideal for everything from salads and sandwiches to sauces and roasts. What better way to enjoy tomatoes than a Roasted Cherry Tomato Salad!

A flavoursome option this week at your local fruit and veg shop is Victorian grown Asparagus which can be enjoyed fresh or cooked! Asparagus is a nutrient-rich veg, containing vitamins K, A and C, which all act to support and promote skin health, so be sure to add these to your shopping list this week. Why not enjoy this healthy Chicken and Asparagus Bowl.

Give your meals a nutrient boost with Broccoli from Victoria this week! Make Broccoli the star of the show with this nourishing Roast Broccoli Salad with Spicy Tahini Dressing. Pick up a head of Broccoli at your local fruit and veg shop and let your imagination run wild with the endless possibilities to prepare this incredible veggie!

Add buckets of flavour to your next meal by using herbs and spices like Coriander from Victoria and Ginger from Bundaberg. Some surprising health benefits of Coriander and Ginger are they both may help to lower blood sugar, improve heart health, and help protect against Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases. Try these Beetroot Crisps with Coriander Hummus and this Ginger and Lime Cooler.
