Brisbane Produce Report – 11 August 2023
Winter is a lovely time of year, despite shorter days and cooler temperatures, it’s a great time to be together with family, and find fun ways to spend the days to fight the cold. One common problem in winter is keeping your skin healthy and supple with the lower humidity in the air. The good thing is eating lots of fruit and vegetables can help keep your skin maintain its elasticity. Head into your local fruit and veg shop to pick up some seasonal produce sourced from the Brisbane Markets to stay healthy this winter.
Our pick of the week is Lemons, as they’re coming in from multiple growing regions, are in great supply and well-priced. Refreshingly tart and slightly sweet, Lemons are a great option for your vitamin C intake to support collagen production throughout the winter months. Lemons make a great addition to tea, added to salad dressing or used to top your morning Avocado on Toast! This Lemon Pepper Fish with Greens and Salsa is a healthy option for you and the family.
Berries are another skin-loving fruit full of antioxidants to support skin health, with Strawberries containing vitamin C and anti-inflammatory properties to reduce breakouts. Sunshine Coast grown Strawberries are a wonderful snacking option and are great quality this week at your local fruit and veg shop. Pink-fleshed Cara Cara Oranges from Victoria are a great option this week. With a unique colouring flesh and delicious flavour, these Oranges are sweet and tart with a slight hint of berry flavours. Coming from Mundubbera, Honey Murcott Mandarins are sweet, juicy and well-priced. Mandarins are great for heling to regulate blood pressure, and boosting the immune system. Make full use of the sweetest of the Mandarin varieties with this Salted Chocolate Mandarin Tart.
Quinces from South Australia are in good supply, so now’s a great time to get your hands on some. With a somewhat sour flavour, the fragrance of a Quince is often likened to a delicate combination of Pear, Apple and Citrus. When buying Quince, look for ones that are plump, hard and evenly coloured.
North Queensland Avocados are a fantastic price this week and are eating beautifully. Avocado is another great skin-loving fruit that is rich in Biotin which is a B vitamin that contributes to skin, nail and hair health. Avocado can be used in a number of ways, sweet or savoury right through from breakfast to lunch. Add avocado to your salads, toast, smoothies or even cakes! Iceberg Lettuce from Lockyer Valley and Gatton are still in abundance, but we’re also seeing Cos Lettuce from several growing regions between Runcorn and Gatton. Whether you are making a salad or stacking up a homemade burger, add some healthy crunch with fresh Lettuce.
Baby Broccoli from Victoria is in good supply, and full of healthy nutrients to keep your body happy through the winter months. For a healthy, hearty meal full of green veg goodness, try these Marinated Lentils with Baby Broccoli and Feta.
Also from Victoria, Leek adds a delicate touch to your savoury dishes. Sauté them with garlic and toss them into a creamy Potato, Leek and Bacon Soup or use them as a savoury filling for your homemade pies or quiches.
Celery is plentiful, coming in from Gatton this week. Celery contains so many nutrients in just a single stalk, and it is a great option to support digestion, reduce inflammation and support your immune system.
