Queensland growing regions have been experiencing ideal conditions, resulting in an abundance of some vegetables coming through the Brisbane Markets this week. So, head into your local fruit and veg shop to take advantage of the plentiful array of fresh, quality winter staples at affordable prices.
Our pick of the week is Capsicums from Bundaberg and Bowen. Red, green or yellow – take your pick as they are all great quality and well-priced. Bundaberg and Bowen have had perfect growing conditions for Capsicum lately resulting in an incredibly high-quality harvest, which means there is plenty coming through the Brisbane Markets to your local fruit and veg shop. Capsicum can be added to so many meals, but if you’re taking advantage of the great prices and stocking up, try making this Capsicum Pesto recipe.
Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes from North Queensland are well priced, in great supply and a perfect winter vegetable. These tubers are incredibly versatile in cooking, allowing you to make hearty winter meals such as a Cabbage, Potato and Leek Gratin, or even sweet treats like these Sweet Potato Blondies.
Leek is also a great option this week, with a good supply coming from Victoria. Related to Onions, Leek are a good source of vitamin C, dietary fibre and iron, and can be used as a milder flavoured substitute to Onion in many recipes, giving a slightly sweeter flavour. They are especially tasty when used in soups, like this Potato Leek and Bacon Soup.
Grown in Boonah, there are lush bunches of Beetroot in great quantity and price. Not just a perfect addition to burgers, Beetroot is an amazing source of folate, manganese, potassium, iron and more. Try something a little different with this colourful Beetroot Pasta.
There’s an abundance of Brussels Sprouts coming from South Australia at good prices this week. Apart from being low in carbohydrates, Brussels Sprouts have high nutritional value and help improve digestion and cardiovascular health. Why not cook up a tasty winter dish of Maple and Mustard Roasted Brussels Sprouts.
With ideal growing conditions in Victoria, we’re seeing Asparagus coming through weeks ahead of the usual harvest period. When selecting Asparagus at your local fruit and veg shop, look for a bright green colour with buds that are tinged violet and firm stems. For a delicious, nutritious snack, try these Baked Asparagus Spears.
Grown on the Sunshine Coast, Raspberries are fresh, juicy and an economical and wonderfully sweet snack on the go. As well as tasting delicious, Raspberries are rich in antioxidants, fibre and vitamin C. Throw a handful into these Raspberry Cheesecake Jars for a simple, tasty dessert.
The winter harvest of Strawberries from the Sunshine Coast is seeing more of these winter berries making their way to your local fruit and veg shop. Warm the house and yourself with these delightful Baked Strawberry Donuts.
For something a little different this week, try Nam Dok Mai. This green-skinned Mango variety is grown in North Queensland where the conditions are just right for a plentiful supply. Nam Dok Mai are not particularly sweet and have a fibreless flesh, making them perfect for Thai salads. As Papayas are also well priced and in good supply from Mareeba and Innisfail, why not combine the two to make a Som Tam Salad?
The price of Navel Oranges from Mildura is still down, so you can keep up some much-needed vitamin C to fight off winter colds. Add a healthy dose of zest to steak night with this Orange, Beet and Steak Salad.
