Brisbane Produce Report – 12 May 2023
Spoil Mum this weekend with homemade delights made with fresh produce from your local fruit and veg shop! From delicious brekkies to warm comforting meals, Mother’s Day is the perfect time to let Mum put her feet up and enjoy a relaxing day with loved ones. As the weather brings a cold snap, we’re loving all things warming and cosy this week, so be sure to shop ahead and plan out your meals this weekend.
Our pick of the week and a perfect base for a special Mother’s Day meal is Tomatoes. There are multiple growing regions producing good quality Tomatoes of all sizes, with Cherry and Grape Tomatoes the best price coming from Stanthorpe. Make fresh tomatoes the hero of this Cherry Tomato Cous Cous Salad.
Imperial Mandarins from Gayndah and Burnett are still flavoursome and plentiful, so make the most of this vitamin C rich fruit to boost your immune system and fight the sniffles as the weather takes a cool turn. Try this Mandarin and Ginger Tart for a delicious hit of citrus!
While they may feel like more of a summer fruit, Watermelons and Rockmelons from North Queensland are in abundance and taste fantastic right now. Treat your mum to a fruity cocktail with this Rockmelon Frosé.
Pomegranates from Mary Valley are picking up so you should see the price reduce on this antioxidant and vitamin C rich item. This delicious fruit provides a unique flavour with a strong, bright colour that can really enhance a dish. Top your favourite salads with Pomegranate or add to your next homemade acai bowl.
Persimmons are in great supply from Stanthorpe this week. This unique autumnal fruit is an absolute treat with a deliciously sweet flavour and soft, juicy texture. Make the most of Persimmons by eating fresh or add them to salads or your morning cereal.
For an exotic delicacy, why not try Rambutan? This tropical fruit is normally a summer crop but is growing well in North Queensland, so you may see it appear in your local fruit and veg shop. Combining an unusual, colourful aesthetic and wonderfully sweet taste, Rambutans can help keep your immune system healthy by flushing out toxins. Enjoy eating raw as a snack or stewed as a special desert for mum.
Also from North Queensland, Avocados are in good supply which has brought the price down. This is due to an overlap of growing seasons, with Hass Avocados in season up until the end of May, while the Shepard Avocado season started in May. An incredibly versatile fruit, Avocados can be used to add texture to a range of dishes, like this delectably creamy Chocolate Avocado Mousse.
With the Lockyer Valley moving into its vegetable harvest season, both Broccoli and Cabbage are readily available. While Cabbage is great for coleslaw, you can also make Broccoli Slaw as a winter alternative.
Sweet Potato from Bundaberg is another winter vegetable favourite to keep an eye out for in your local fruit and veg shop. The region has had good weather, resulting in an abundant harvest that’s good quality and well-priced. Make the most of this staple with an easy to prepare Sweet Potato and Kale Frittata.
Coming from Bundaberg and the Sunshine Coast, Ginger has also benefited from good weather, just in time for the cooler months. This zesty root is a fantastic source of vitamin C, which is why it appears in so many homemade cold remedies. With Watermelon also in supply, this Watermelon and Ginger Smoothie is light and refreshingly good for you.
Green Beans from North Queensland are great value this week and are a great source of vitamins A, C, and K. This Green Bean, Fig and Feta Salad is a winner for Autumn and is a great way to try out green beans. We also love them cooked and tossed in olive oil, garlic and salt for a delicious and simple side dish.
