Brisbane Produce Report – 28 June 2024

The eating habits developed as children have a lifelong influence on our health and well-being. These school holidays why not take the kids to your local fruit and veg shop to stock up on healthy snacks from the wide variety of fresh in-season produce flowing through the Brisbane Markets.

The pick of the week is crisp, colourful Capsicums which are in great supply and well-priced at your local fruit and veg shop. Queensland grows the majority of Australia’s capsicums with the Burdekin and Burnett growing regions both significant suppliers. Capsicums have twice the vitamin C of oranges and are chock full of antioxidants, and while they come in a variety of vibrant colours, the red ones are the most nutritious. Capsicum mixes beautifully with other in-season veg like Lockyer Valley Broccoli and Asian Greens and Bundaberg Snow Peas in this classic Chicken and Vegetable Stir Fry.

The cooler weather has impacted growing conditions in the Lockyer Valley and while there are still good buys to be had for Broccoli, Cabbage, Lettuce and leafy greens we can expect to see prices rise over the coming weeks. That makes now the ideal time to try your hand at Tempura Winter Veg with Umami Dipping Sauce.

Zucchinis from Bundaberg are a great buy at the moment as are ripe, red Tomatoes from Bundaberg and Bowen. Zucchini is rich in B vitamins like B6, folate, and riboflavin that support a healthy metabolism. These B vitamins aid in cognitive health, reduced fatigue, and assisting in mental health. Folate is tied to cell growth and tissue development. Bring Zucchini and Tomatoes together in this Ricotta and Zucchini Ravioli.

For fruit lovers, winter is synonymous with crisp Apples, juicy citrus and mouth-watering Melons. Most citrus lines are well supplied with Navel Oranges out of Gayndah plentiful and well-priced. Mandarin fans are welcoming the arrival of the Murcott Mandarins from the Burnett region. A late season variety, the aptly named Honey Murcotts are the sweetest of the mandarin varieties grown commercially in Australia. These school holidays let the kids help prepare some delicious Mandarin Chicken Rice Paper Rolls.

The North Queensland Watermelon season is coming to an end, but later season crops out of the Northern Territory are maintaining good supply. Ginger from Gympie and the Sunshine Coast is also in good supply. Ginger aids digestion and boosts your immune system so add some to a Watermelon Crush for some super-healthy winter hydration.

Excellent growing conditions in Victoria and Tasmania are ensuring supplies of Apples in varieties such as Fuji, Gala and Granny Smiths remain strong. For something different, check out the red-fleshed apples from New South Wales and South Australia that are arriving now in fruit and veg shops. The large Granny Smith Apples coming out of Victoria are perfect for Apple Strudel.
