Brisbane Produce Report – 20 June 2024

This week sees the shortest day of the year and along with the crisp mornings and early sunsets, winter brings its own set of seasonal delights flooding into the Brisbane Markets from thousands of local growers. Buying seasonal produce from your local fruit and veg shop means you enjoy things at their best and often save money, so head on down and fill your trolley.

The pick of the week is Mandarins. With Imperial Mandarins coming north from Mildura and increasing supplies of late-season Murcott Mandarins from Mundubbera and Afourer Mandarins from Gayndah, Mandarins should remain plentiful and well-priced for some time to come. Sweet and easy to peel, Mandarins are chock full of Vitamins A, B and C and support your immune system in fighting off winter coughs and colds. For something indulgent why not try this Salted Chocolate and Mandarin Tart.

Other citrus out of the Burnett region and Atherton Tablelands, including Oranges, Lemons, and Grapefruit, are abundant.

Perfect growing conditions for Apples in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania are producing fruit that is unusually large. While this can make it harder to find smaller Apples for school lunches it’s perfect for baking winter treats like this classic  Apple Crumble or delectable Apple and Cinnamon Tart.

North Queensland Watermelons and Honey Dews are great quality at the moment and very well priced.

Capsicums out of North Queensland and Bundaberg are plentiful with prices falling. Not only are Capsicums delicious but they are also an excellent source of potassium for bone health, antioxidants, folate and vitamin C meaning you can tuck into guilt-free treats like this Roasted Capsicum Bruschetta with Haloumi.

If you are looking to add some winter spice to the menu, Chillis are very well supplied as are Lemongrass and Lockyer Valley Shallots.
