Brisbane Produce Report – 31 May 2024

Winter is just around the corner, and while we are well into the winter vegetable season at the Brisbane Markets, we are still seeing some wonderful tropical fruits still available at affordable prices. Find out what’s in great supply and at a great price at your local fruit and veg shop this week.

Our pick of the week is Watermelon, coming in from North Queensland and the Northern Territory. These fruits are great eating right now, and thanks to the overlap of two growing regions, they’re in great supply and incredibly priced, making it a perfect time to enjoy this summer favourite.

Also from North Queensland, Rockmelons are top-quality and abundant. Juicy and flavoursome with a fragrant aroma that indicates their ripeness. Bring these melons together to enjoy this fresh tasting Watermelon, Rockmelon and Goat’s Cheese Salad.

Passionfruit from the Atherton Tablelands and Northern New South Wales is available in good quantities. The fruit is bursting with flavour, perfect for adding a tropical twist to any dish.

Prices are down on Cavendish Bananas and Lady Finger Bananas from North Queensland. Both varieties are great eating, with Cavendish offering a creamy texture and Lady Fingers providing a sweeter taste.

An overlap in the Australian and New Zealand growing seasons has brought the price down on Green Kiwifruit. Firm, tangy, with vibrant, green flesh that’s rich in nutrients, Kiwifruit are a healthy snack on the go.

If you’d like to try something different, Pomelo from North Queensland is in season. This large citrus fruit is similar to a Grapefruit and can be eaten as is or added to salads like this Prawn and Pomelo Salad. They can be juiced, used to make marmalade, or used in any other recipe that requires sweet citrus.

Hass Avocado continue to be incredibly affordable this week thanks to an abundant supply from North Queensland. These Avocados are creamy and rich, perfect for salads or spreads.

You’ll have no trouble finding Eggplant in your local fruit and veg shop, as North Queensland, Bundaberg and South Australia growing regions are all growing strong.

Winter is the perfect time for growing green, leafy vegetables in the Lockyer Valley, so there’s fantastic prices on Iceberg Lettuce, Sugarloaf Cabbage and Wombok Cabbage this week.

We are well into Brussels Sprout season, with fresh Sprouts coming from Victoria and South Australia. There are plenty of warming winter recipes using Brussels Sprout, but our favourite is this Brussels Sprouts and Blue Cheese Pizza.

Lastly, Ginger from the Sunshine Coast is excellent quality and in good supply. Add a healthy, yet zesty, kick to your dishes with this versatile spice.
