Brisbane Produce Report – 17 May 2024

Are you craving flavoursome, seasonal produce to enhance your cooking? Your local fruit and veg shop is the perfect place to pick up fresh, in season fruit and vegetables sourced from the Brisbane Markets.

Our pick of the week is Green Cabbage, as it’s in great supply and well-priced from the Lockyer Valley. We all know Cabbage in a simple coleslaw side dish, but why not make it part of the main meal with this Charred Cabbage and Fried Egg with Miso Butter Spaghetti recipe.

As we come into the cooler months, you’ll see more and more vegetable items coming from the Lockyer Valley, such as Iceberg Lettuce and Kent Pumpkin, which are both available at affordable prices this week.

Ginger from the Sunshine Coast is in season and perfect for adding flavour to all kinds of dishes. Try spicing up your breakfast by making this Pear and Ginger Oatmeal.

Looking further north, you’ll see Hass Avocados from North Queensland in abundance at your local fruit and veg shop, as well as plump Eggplant from Bundaberg and North Queensland.

Navel Oranges are in season and we’re seeing plenty of this juicy citrus making its way through the Markets from all over Queensland. With one Orange providing almost twice your recommended daily vitamin C intake, they’re perfect for keeping those autumn sniffles at bay.

Queensland grown Pineapples are sensational eating at the moment. They’re sweet, juicy and just as good eaten fresh as they are used in cooking. For a zesty twist on a traditional dish, try this Blended Pork and Pineapple Tacos recipe.

If you’d like to try some more unusual seasonal fruits, you’ll find Dragon Fruit from South East Queensland available with white, red, pink or champaign coloured flesh. Custard Apples are growing well in South East Queensland and New South Wales, and we’re still in the middle of Feijoa season with quality fruit coming in from Stanthorpe.

And while the season is soon coming to an end for North Queensland grown Mangosteens, there is still a good supply in the Markets. The next few weeks are also your last chance to get fresh South East Queensland Persimmons.
