Brisbane Produce Report – 26 April 2024

It’s a great time to be shopping for fresh produce. With the cooler months setting in we’re seeing changing produce lines coming through the Brisbane Market and on to your local fruit and veg shop. Find out what seasons are ending, exciting new lines starting, and what’s in full swing.

Figs from Lockyer Valley and Bundaberg are pick of the week as there is great quality fruit available at affordable prices. Figs are known for their unique texture and are perfect for both sweet and savoury dishes. Look for figs that are plump and have a rich colour, indicating ripeness.

We’re in the height of Imperial Mandarin season, with sweet, juicy fruit coming in from regions throughout Queensland. Mandarins are easy to peel and a great source of vitamin C, making them a healthy snack option.

The Victorian Pear season is now underway, with juicy fruit readily available. Pears can be enjoyed on their own, with deserts, as a cooked dessert, and even in savoury dishes like this Sausage and Pear Bake.

Lemons and Limes from North Queensland continue to be abundant in the Markets, making for low prices in your local fruit and veg shop. These citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C and are great for adding a burst of freshness to both sweet and savoury recipes.

Pomegranates from Victoria and New South Wales are now in season and are fantastic eating. Even low-priced fruit with a slightly imperfect exterior has incredibly flavoursome seeds within. Enjoy Pomegranates by eating them fresh or adding to desserts or salads.

With Eggplant from New South Wales also still in good supply, why not try this Roast Eggplant, Pomegranate and Pecan Dip.

We’re seeing stable prices on leafy greens like Bok Choy, grown throughout South East Queensland, and Baby Cos Lettuce grown in Stanthorpe.

Another staple vegetable you’ll find affordable prices on is Carrots, with plenty of this root vegetable coming from South Australia and Western Australia.

The price of Broccoli has also come down, with good quality heads of this vegetable coming from Stanthorpe. For a tasty treat, check out this Air-fried Broccoli and Corn Cheese Balls recipe.
