Brisbane Produce Report – 29 September 2023
With football grand finals this weekend, and excellent conditions across many growing regions, your local fruit and veg shop is brimming with a diverse abundance of well-priced, fresh produce sourced through the Brisbane Markets, supplied by Aussie farms, to elevate your football snacks and game-day meals for the whole family.
Our pick of the week is Blueberries from Coffs Harbour which are in fantastic supply this week and are perfect for game-day snacks. Also coming into the Market from Crows Nest and New South Wales, Blueberries are full of antioxidants, have a delightfully sweet flavour, and are perfect eaten alone or with a cheese platter. Why not try this Blueberry Moscow Mule Mocktail?
It’s also an ideal time to indulge in some Sunshine Coast Strawberries. With their vibrant, red hue and juicy, slightly tart flavour, Strawberries are a symbol of spring and a perfect addition to your football snacks. Try Strawberry bruschetta with basil and balsamic glaze for a sweet and savoury appetizer.
If you love Mandarins as much as the football, then now is the time to stock up on these vitamin C packed, juicy delights from South Australia and New South Wales, as the end of the season is drawing near. Roasted Beetroot and Mandarin Salad could be a great accompaniment to your game-day barbeque!
Stone fruit has just hit the Market this week, so you will start to see delicious Peaches and Nectarines grown near Kingaroy in your local fruit and veg shop. Peaches and Nectarines have many health promoting compounds and nourishing minerals. Prosciutto Wrapped Peaches are the perfect, healthy, celebratory finger food.
Bowen and Bundaberg are still producing an abundance of Tomatoes, which are great eating and well-priced. Tomatoes, which are technically a fruit, are related to the Potato, Capsicum and Eggplant. Pick up a variety of different Tomatoes at your local fruit and veg shop this week to make this Rainbow Tomato Salad.
Ginger from the Sunshine Coast is still in great supply. Ginger is a popular home remedy and cooking ingredient with endless health benefits including reducing nausea, pain and digestive issues. This Ginger and Lime Cooler is great for celebrating, then the next morning you can enjoy Ginger steeped in boiling water as a herbal tea.
The Lockyer Valley is still harvesting an abundance of Broccoli, Baby Broccoli, Cauliflower and Cabbage. Due to its rich soil, this region is rated as one of the most fertile growing regions in the world. A great way to make the most of these abundant, low-cost vegetables is with a Vegetable Tempura and Umami Dipping Sauce.
Also from the Lockyer Valley, Asian Veg is of great quality this week, with a selection of Gai Lan and Pak Choy available. Perfect for your weekly stir fry or quickly cooked through with some bold flavours to accompany fish and rice or noodles.
Choko from North Queensland and Beerburrum is in good supply and are a great pick if you’re wanting to try something different this week. Indulge in something new and try making Choko Chips or stir through a light and refreshing slaw.
Broad Beans make for a great healthy and protein-packed game snack option in the form of broad bean hummus, served with pita bread or vegetable sticks. Pick up some Broad Beans from your local fruit and veg shop this week – you won’t be disappointed!
